Pulling plug on Florida State game might not cost WVU

Aside from two pending lawsuits with the Big East, West Virginia has taken the first concrete step toward clearing its schedule to join the Big 12 in football this fall.

The school on Friday sent a letter to Florida State notifying the Seminoles that they were backing out of the scheduled Sept. 8 game between the schools in Tallahassee. The buyout for such a move is $500,000.

There's a catch, though. Sources indicate that the contract between WVU and FSU for games in 2012 in Tallahassee and 2013 in Morgantown also contains a clause that would relieve WVU of paying the penalty if Florida State manages to replace the Mountaineers with a comparable opponent.

Well, that's a relief. I wondered how the Mounties were gonna fit Norfolk State into the schedule again.

Of course they'll drop a BCS team. They can't beat Florida St. They have a good chance of beating Marshall every year, but they have NO chance of ever beating Florida St. They couldn't even beat a 6-6 Seminole team in a bowl. Next team dropped from the schedule: Thundering Herd.

The Who's schedule won't be made up of weak Big East teams anymore. The Herd will be dropped in order to play James Madison or Norfolk St; another guaranteed win. Something that wasn't so easy against the Herd. If they even actually go to the Big 12.

That means the big 12 is guaranteed. We had to drop somebody. Makes sense money wise. James Madison is worth a lot of money in D.C. Politically we had to keep marshall. Maryland is sort of a rivalry. The big 12 schedule will be good enough for strength of schedule. Just glad the marshall series is over with this year.

With respect to The Big 12 & Big Least, I can understand why WVU made that move, although it would have been a great atmosphere in Morgantown for The FSU Game... Clearly, there is no longer a need to schedule programs that are on the rise, albeit inferior talent like James Madison, Norfolk State, or Coastal Carolina which have been traditionally viewed as timing/tune up games when you an extremely inferior opponent on your schedule; like Marshall! (Seriously, it's beyond pathetic) (0-for a lifetime)

I don't understand why so many of you are against the Marshall game. I'm a WVU fan but I'd rather they play Marshall than Youngstown, Bowling Green or Norfolk. It's a good game for West Virginia. I totally support Marshall and WVU, except when they are playing each other then I'm for WVU.

First, this means the move to the Big12 is a done deal for next year. Great!

Therefore, we need a few pansies on our schedule for HOME games.

As far as I'm concerned, Marsha is welcome to make the trek to
Morgantown to get thumped every year.

But you can forget the Mounties ever coming to Huntington again. The legislature already donates $2.5M a year to keep Marsha's football program afloat, whole WVU's program gets almost nothing. Making WVU go to Huntington is just another way to shovel money away from WVU to Marsha. Unless the Legislature decides to level the playing field by subsidizing WVU's program in proportion to Marsha's (>$5M a year) and makes up what WVU loses on trips to Marsha, then NEVER AGAIN!

Also, I'd vote for dropping Marsha to keep Pitt next year

Good! This means we're going to be playing in the Big 12. Good riddance to the Big Least. What a relief.

Remember the FSU series was because of the ACC raid. If this means trading FSU for Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State, and TCU, then WVU comes out ahead

Need to keep the home games with Marshall and Maryland, plus the guarantee with JMU. There would have been too much backlash if they tried to cancel Marshall. Glad with the schedule they have.

I totally agree with Cutty. ACC only schedules WVU when they need to use us to fill a game slot. If we're not good enough to be in their conference, then we shouldn't play any of their teams during the regular season. And I also believe that FSU wouldn't have come to Motown the next year. They would have found some reason to back out of the game. Good job Oliver Luck!

I don't care if we ever play another ACC team. Florida State, Clemson et. al. let be hanged. Bring on the Big 12 with Texas, Oklahome, TCU, Okey State!

Let me explain the math so even supperfly/herdwonnone/marshall fan, all the same person can understand.

With the inclusion of the big 12 schedule, WVU had to get out of 1 game for next year. 9 conf. games to be scheduled, with JMU 2.5 million, not happening, 2 home games with MD and MU, not happening, so that left FSU only.

See here is the problem. We will only have 6 home games this year, the big 12 is going to give us 4 home games this year, with the neutral game and 5 away, that leaves MD and MU to keep 6. WVU was not going to cancel the JMU for a pay out of 2.5 million. GUARANTEED. or the MD or MU game, due to only having 6.

So next year, MD is away, and the 4 away for the big 12 which equals 5 away, we can get back to the 7/5 split for 2013 and beyond.

CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THAT MATH HERDWONNONE?

Hard to make a comparison like this, supayourflyisopen, but Clemson crushed Fl. State last year. Do the math. Largely due to Bobby Bowdon's lingering influence, Fl. State stills get a lot of unwarrented press. They are an unstable, mediocre team at best and have been since Wienke went pro, and that was 10 years ago. FSU's glory has faded - out. The cronic, "wait 'til next year" team of the 90's. The New Improved Mountie's should be scheduling powerhouses. But with that 70 point runaway cruise in the Orange Bowl, they'll be the one's having problem's filling the void, not FSU.

tellme, Please explain the 210 million dollar appropriation to WVU from the state tax payer? You and some other peeps like to claim that the sports program receives no state support. The students also pay a portion of the sports budget with tuition. Accounting can move the money to any line-item they choose. Problem is that without state tax payer support WVU is a private institution and that my friend is not the current set-up. BTW, WVU is the third largest receiver of state taxes in the system. 1. public education 2. heath and human services and 3. WVU.

What's Marshall have to do with this? More students and alumni from both schools need to post more often, rather than the Ninety Five Percent who never attended neither Marshall University or West Virginia University.

Good post, dumb hillbilly, but I'll take the Herd. You're spot-on, otherwise.

Cutty & Seacat- with you Bros- the ACC disrespects the WVU/EERS- but we use Maryland the same way- for our advantage!- those who have been blasting Oliver Luck are still probably wondering why Uncle Bill hasn't landed a high profile job, with his record and all. I hope that being in the Big 12 keeps Holgy for a long time- if he pulls this one off(winning the Big 12 in a yr or three)-The NFL will come a calling.

yeah, drop Marshall and add a yearly series with Pitt. Only in a MU fan's mind, and only very few of them at that, does a rivalry exists with The U. Pitt, on the other hand, is a true and great rivalry. Stop playing to MU fans that demand something at the cost of WVU. oh, i forgot, WVU 70, Clemson "a lot less".

It would have been nice to finally see Jimbo Fisher coaching in his home state again. After all, he was reportedly on his way down the hall to tell Bobby he was heading home when his agent called and said that Eddie had reniged on his deal. How different might things been if Jimbo had indeed landed the job instead of Stew?

    Some flys are clueless

The Mountaineers have beaten the following on the largest colleges stages (BCS bowls) Georgia (SEC champion) Oklahoma (Big 12 champion) Clemson (ACC champion)

If you're going to be a WVU hater.....thats fine, but at least clean up your argument around who we play. I mean the Big 12 changes our schedule and toughens it up....not down.

Some of you must write editorials and cover politics for the Gazette....you are about that dumb
