ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- A St. Albans businessman who had fallen on hard times shot and killed himself Thursday morning while Kanawha County sheriff's deputies were trying to serve an eviction notice.

"It's sad," said Capt. James Agee of the St. Albans Police Department. "We know him, and he's a good guy."

Police had not released the man's name as of Thursday afternoon, pending notification of relatives.

Agee said the 63-year-old man had been notified in February that his home in the 2800 block of Lincoln Avenue was being foreclosed on. "He knew it was coming," Agee said.

When process servers from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department and movers showed up about 10 a.m. to tell the man it was time to leave, the man was cooperative, Agee said. However, when he went back inside to get his things, deputies heard a shot.

Agee said the businessman had fallen on hard times and was having financial trouble with his business.

The man shot himself with a handgun, Agee said.

"It's sad this is the choice he made," he said.
