Tulsa tops Herd 79-70

TULSA, Okla. - Jordan Clarkson scored 21 points and Steven Idlet wreaked havoc on Marshall's inside game as Tulsa pulled away for a 79-70 victory over the Thundering Herd Saturday night at the Reynolds Center.

The Golden Hurricane (14-9, 7-2) won its seventh game in a row, pulling into second place by itself in the Conference USA standings. It is a half-game behind leader Southern Mississippi and a half-game ahead of Memphis.

Marshall (14-9, 5-4) lost its fifth game in the last six and fell into fifth place with another tough road game ahead, Wednesday night at Central Florida.

Clarkson hit two difficult shots late in the game to quash a Marshall rally. The Herd had scored five straight points and trailed 71-67 when Clarkson hit a closely guarded, off-balance 3-pointer deep in the shot clock. Then, after a Dago Pena turnover, Clarkson scored a three-point play to put Tulsa up 77-67 with 1:16 left.

The Hurricane shot 56 percent from the floor to 40 percent for Marshall, and outrebounded the Herd 34-30. Part of that was chalked up to foul trouble, as MU was whistled 28 times.

Idlet played a major role, as the 6-foot-11 senior had 10 free throws and hit them all. He helped get all of the Herd's big men got in foul trouble, with Nigel Spikes fouling out in just seven minutes. Five different Marshall players had two fouls in the first half as Tulsa took a 37-30 lead.

Damier Pitts and DeAndre Kane scored 21 points each and Dennis Tinnon had 12 points and nine rebounds for Marshall, but the rest of the team scored just 16 points on 5-of-19 shooting. The Herd went just 3-of-13 from 3-point range, putting a damper on an excellent 23-of-28 night at the foul line.

The Herd scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 39-37 lead, but Scottie Haralson hit a deep 3-pointer and Tim Peete went the length of the floor off his own rebound to make it 47-44. The Herd battled back, tying it at 52 on a Robert Goff jumper with 9:54 left.

But Idlet hit two free throws to break the tie for good. A few possessions later, D.J. Magley's offensive rebound of a missed free throw led to a Kodi Maduka basket and a 56-52 lead. The Herd played from behind the rest of the way, and a Kane technical foul with 3:52 didn't help matters. Haralson's two free throws made it 71-62 at that point.

Marshall is now 0-7 at Tulsa, 0-6 in the Reynolds Center and 0-1 at the BOK Center downtown, with the loss in the 2010 C-USA tournament. Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik, a Wheeling native, is now tied for the school's all-time lead in victories with 137, pulling even with Clarence Iba.

Marshall takes on UCF at 7 p.m. Wednesday at UCF Arena in Orlando. The Herd returns home next Saturday night, taking on East Carolina at 7.
